Difference between two phrases in the English language?

Consider the phrases:

(1) Online dating is becoming increasingly popular.
(2) It is becoming increasingly popular for people to date online.

What tense is each of these written in and when is it better to use one of these two equivalent statements rather than the other?

They're both present tense. The second sounds more formal, which would be good for an essay or something. But either would work in any situation.

(1) I'd say the first one is present tense. It's not past...because I think it's still in the process of.
(2) Same for sentence #2.

I'd do with the first sentence.
