Why push religion on to others?

Sooo, I'm hoping that there is a reasonable answer for this, But why do people continue to pressure others into following into their religion? Is it somewhere written in the majority of religious books to convert others to follow? or to "save them". I'm not asking for religious quotes about people going to hell if they don't believe, etc or whatever religion,

But why do care so much about other people, who are merely strangers to them, don't follow the same religion as they do? Looking for any evidence for the reason why to this answer. Psychology would greatly be appreciated or anything science based, quotes from said religions would be great too, if relevant.

Opinions always welcome as well.

As with every group, there is good and bad within the theist community. Unfortunately it is the bad ones who tend to make the most noise. It is easy to generalize all Christians as being like Jehovah's Witnesses and televangelists if they are the only Christians you are regularly exposed to. It is easy to assume that all Muslims believe in killing unbelievers if that is what Fox News is feeding you every day. However, for every televangelist who needs converts to buy his next Cadillac, for every extremist terrorist or rabid creationist, there are thousands of perfectly decent (if misguided) theists who are quite content to live and let live.

Since almost every religious book includes some requirement to go out and spread the word, I think the fact that the vast majority of theists are prepared to overlook this and conform to more civilized behavior speaks volumes for their common decency and indicates that they may no be beyond saving!
