What is a good low cost sewing machine for a novice?

I am a novice when it comes to sewing machines. I would like to buy a basic, low cost machine to do some hemming and simple patching. The past machine I bought (a Singer) broke after only using is a few times (this was several years ago). I'd like to find something simple to use and that costs less than a hundred dollars. I don't need a lot of bells and whistles just a solid basic sewing machine. Any suggestions?

Under $100 and unlikely to break puts you in the good used machine category. See: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AtVc8znRrlRdYqlm02KFETbty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100423044254AAnGzFy&show=7#profile-info-OKJf8nHFaa and http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20111020035301AAowAnQ

I agree that Singer and Brother are reliable reliable fashions...they are reliable respected businesses and also you'd have the ability to get classes and coaching at their dealerships..i'm satisfied to confirm multiple youthful ones growing attracted to stitching...
