I am 62 years old and disabled, and unable to work, and receiving short-term disability at present. If I apply for retirement and disability at the same time, I will probably get retirement before I get disability. But if I am awarded disability later (which is more than my retirement), will my benefit convert to disability?

If you file for both reduced retirement benefits and disability benefits you will first be paid the retirement benefit. If your disability is approved you will then be converted to the higher disability benefit. There will be a slight reduction in the disability benefit to account for those months you received the retirement benefit before becoming entitled to the disability benefit. Then when you are age 66 (or whatever your full retirement age is) your disability benefit will be converted to a retirement benefit without any change in the benefit amount. There is no such thing as a disability benefit once someone reaches full retirement age. You will become entitled to Medicare if you want it after you've been entitled to disability benefits for 24 months.

Yes, when you reach the full retirement age which is currently 66 or 67. You cannot get both benefits because they are the same. SSDI is for people under 66. Your benefit at 62 under SSDI will be about the same as if you were age 66 getting your full retirement benefit.
