I mean you already have your money laundered with twice as much in cash sitting around. In a poor country you can already live like a king, I don't understand why not just quit, take the money and vamonos.

When you work in the illegal drug business, you DO NOT quit. There is always some one that insists that you stay. Your guilt, and his ability to prove it, are strong reasons for you, to do as you're are told. If there is a possibility that you might be able to incriminate another person, that person will probably have you killed, rather than risk you quitting, and the narcs finding out. This is organized crime, in every sense of the word, just as the Mafia was/is in the USA. A lot of drug "lords" ARE Sicilian Mafia, or connected. If you are "in" you are in for life. However long that turns out to be. Even a "one time" courier, isn't allowed to just do it once.
This is why we need to decriminalize recreational drugs. The "war on drugs" has made too many illicit billionaires. And caused too many casualties. On the US/Mexican border alone, the toll is over 40,000.
