How can I sleep through the night I keep waking up?

Sometimes at 1~3 or 5 am. I don't know what the deal is. I do take mild xanax for anxiety but they only help me FALL asleep not stay asleep. Any advice would be great as my days are becoming more unproductive due to this lack of sleep. I used to sleep 8 hours a night but not anymore. PS I'm 40 years old and not overweight.

When you wake up, how long do you stay awake? The brain sleeps in cycles of about 90 minutes each, and it is not unusual to wake up between sleep cycles. You can wake up every 90 minutes and still get a perfectly restful sleep. It's only a problem if you stay awake for more then a few minutes, or if you wake up between sleep cycles. I used to wake up at 2-3 am and be awake for two hours. Then I'd sleep the rest of the night. I got used to it and still got enough sleep to survive.

Taking xanax in the late afternoon or early evening might not be a good idea because if it wears off in the middle of the night, that can cause you to wake up and have a hard time getting to sleep. I'd wake up at 3am when the meds wore off and just shake and stay away for hours. Maybe you could time your xanax dosage so that it doesn't wear off in the middle of the night?

Would not hurt to talk to your doctor. You are at the age when sleep apnea can develop, and it can also cause you to wake up in the middle of the night.

If you do go for a sleep study, keep in mind that sleep doctors are experts at sleep apnea and sleep in general, but they tend to know very little about insomnia. If your waking up is not caused by sleep apnea, they might not be able to help you. All they did for me was to tell me to take ambien and xanax. They could not solve the problem for me or help me because I did not have sleep apnea.

PS: Solid sleep without dreaming is not normal or healthy. It is normal to dream at the end of each sleep cycle, and if you are not dreaming it indicates a disruption in your sleep cycles. Which is very possible if you wake up before the end of sleep cycles - you could be suffering from lack of REM sleep, a form of sleep deprivation because you wake up before finishing the dreaming portion of the sleep cycle. Again - talk to a knowledgeable doctor about this.

Perhaps your body is like an alarm clock. It tells you to wake up at a certain time. Try to accomplish things before going to sleep. I was experiencing similar sleep issues like you for about a month. But then I just trained my body to stay asleep throughout the night. You can try relaxing music in the background.

Hi, I don't know if it's legal where your from, but the best solid sleep for me comes from mary jane. Full 8 hrs of solid sleep, no dreaming, just pure deep sleep and wake up feeling great. Obviously, if it's illegal, or your job doesn't allow it, then it's not for you.

See your doctor and ask about sleep apnea.
There is a possibility you are waking up for often than what you realize.

Only a sleep test can tell for sure.
Your dr would possibly refer you to a sleep specialist ( Pulmonary medicine)
