tower not talking to the monitor, but it won't start? does the tower power on? and if so, does it beep at you? if not, you might just have a loose/bad video cable or a bad monitor. does the monitor turn on? as in, does it get power to it... whether a picture displays or not? if not, check the power cord. if so, make sure the computer is securely connected to the monitor. also, if so- and depending on the monitor - you should at least have something on-screen indicating the monitor is on, possibly saying something to the effect of "no input"

if the computer isnt showing any signs of life, its 99% of the time a failed power supply. Ask a geek squad member to look at the computer and buy the part off them if thats the case. it doesnt take a rocket scientist to replace a power supply.
If the computer is showing that its on, then maybe you have a bad VGA/DVI cable or monitor. Try the computer on another monitor and make sure the cable is tight, otherwise nothing will show up on the screen.

Confirm anything in the computer is working like the fans or the hard drive spinning up and listen for any beeps. Also see if anything appears on your monitor at all like start up POST messages. If no video at all but everything seems to work, your video card may be bad. Otherwise expect the problem to be with the motherboard or the power supply.
