run msconfig and on the startup tab, uncheck all programs you don't wish to load.
you may also want change your anti-virus protection to something that is faster.

Windows startups becomes slower and slower as time goes, this is happening because we are installing more software to it. If these softwares requires loading on windows startup, they will be queuing up whenever you start your windows and thus slowing up the entire process. MSConfig tool of Windows can help you speed up by removing unnecessary programs at startup. Click Start -> Run and type in msconfig. Select Services tab, and scan through the list. Remove anything you think unnecessary to be there. Usually if it’s a Microsoft corporation service, just leave it. Select the Startup tab, remove the software or application you don’t to load at startup. Use Command tells you where the particular application in installed. Things you untick here will not be loaded on the next windows startup. Click Ok, and restart your computer and see if it loads faster now If you messed up the settings, Go to General Tab and select Normal Startup and everything will fall back to original.

There is a few things that will help depending what the casue is. Firstly, run a virus and spyware scan. You'll be amazed how spyware/malware you may have. Cleaning that will increase speed straight away. Then run the Disk Cleanup feature (I'm assuming you have Windows XP?). Last of all run the Defrag.
After all of those have been done you will probably notice a lot of difference.
This is assuming you have enough memory to run all your resident programs of course? And that it's not just a slow old processor?

I had that problem.
I think over time they can slow down by themselves, especially if it's hooked to the internet. They can build up space junk. It may not necessarily be a virus but maybe you 'temp folder' is full or your harddrive doesn't have much more room. Have you check its space availabily and what is left? Aslo, too many icons on desktop and maybe too many little startup icons in your startup menu.

After you boot, click RUN then type " msconfig"
at the start-up tab, uncheck the start-up items you don't want to run.

zeven77 is right. Msconfig go to start up and uncheck any program you do not need running in the background all the time.

Get a program that can clean-up your registry. The registry is telling the computer to start up non-essential programs upon start-up. You need to tell it to stop.
You can try jv16 powertools or whatever program you choose.
