computer starts but nothing else works?
Hey,
My computer has been shutting itself off lately.
Now when I start it up the computer and fans start up but the monitor doesnt start up and none of the usb ports work.
What is wrong? Power supply bad?
Update: I am on another computer of course for those that asked.
I know the USB ports dont work because the mouse lights up when its plugged in, now it doesnt....
I built this computer myself about a year and a half ago.

Sounds like you have been having an overheat issue. I am betting that something has finally gone bad due to that problem. Does the computer make any beeps when it starts up? Sometimes you may be able to tell from these beep codes what the problem is. If it does beep check out the link below and look for the BIOS manufacture on the right side under beep codes. Maybe it will give you some more information. Otherwise it is test one piece at a time until you find the problem. Good Luck.

Nop, if the fans and lights are on ... then the PSU is fine. Dont replace the power supply cuz that will just be a waste of money. Not sure if your problem is the same as mine BUT when I built my own computer heres what I forgot:
There is a small 4 x 4 white power slot located on your mobo near the back where the monitor and USB's get pugged in. That slot MUST have a cord placed in from your power supply. Some power supplies have two cords that would fit, some only have one. Without that cord plugged in, nothing you plug into the back of your computer would work but it would still turn on.
That was one of the most confusing problems Ive ever had but it turned out I just forgot to plug something in. If your computer is a Dell or something then your motherboard was probably fried ... but a fried mobo usually wont even turn on the PC.

Sounds like what my computer did about a month or two ago. Out of the blue, my monitor goes dark, yet the computer was on. It turned out to be the cooling fan went out. As a result, the motherboard AND the main hard drive went out. I ended up having to get a whole new computer....
HOWEVER (and this is a big however), I had my computer for a good 7-8 years, all original. Granted, computers shouldn't die at all (unless they still have "pong" on them). Just keep in mind that you should probably take your computer to an experienced technician. Hopefully, it doesn't end up being a major deal.

how do you know the usb ports don't work if the monitor won't turn on?
it could be the power supply - sometimes even if the power supply is bad it will still kinda work
or it could be your video card or hard drive. if your hard drive is going bad it can make your computer not start up and if the video card is bad it will make the screen not light up.
lots of possibilities.

Gotta see it ta restoration it. some computers are dependant on the case being set back exact. If the case is bumped off, a grounding touch is broken and could be reset by ability of having the grounding swap exact set back. A pass over by ability of an insignificant sixteenth of an inch won't floor it back. be valuable the case is replaced exact. Mebba the pictures card is shot. Mebba the RAM sticks at the instant are not seated desirable. Mebba the visual exhibit unit is 'kaput'. Mebba the person is dreamin'. Mebba, mebba, mebba.

oh...well, u will have to open up ur computer for that, check all the wires are in order, some wires might not be plugged in, that ok, they are supposed to be like that...btw...what computer is it? if nothing works then its a electrical current problem...take it to a repair shop or call a Geek Squad (Best Buy).

if it is not powered up you can be sure the usb ports will not work. duh! nobody knows why it is not powered up. absolutely would have to examine it first hand. anybody who says differently is full of krap.
cannot solve problems by blowing.
