I really need help ferret litter training outside their cage?

Question

I feel like I've seriously tried everything.

1.) Not letting them out before they potty. I have two ferrets and that's super hard to do!

Right now I have a ferret in the cage doing this and he chose to sleep, even tho I saw him multiple times try to go on the floor.

2.) I've picked up both ferrets about to go and put them into litter pans.

Smokey faked it and ran upstairs and went on the floor! Why do ferrets fake going?!

3.) I made sure I bought cat pans so they can use easily, I use the same litter inside the cage and they never have accidents.

We have two cat pans and some small pans that they used to tolerate using.

T-T I followed them for an hour yesterday and the second I look away, after multiple times of stopping them from going on the floor and putting them in the litter pan, Smokey does it in the kitchen!

And the one time Smokey did use the pan, I gave him a treat.

Bandit just lies in the pan and sighs...

What am I supposed to do?

I would recommend puppy pee pads. I had to a similar problem where he would go in any corner of the room he felt like, but after putting up pee pads he was able to bring the number of corners down to just the 1 with the pee pad. I personally find it easier anyways to clean. As someone suggested maybe he just doesn't like the feel of the litter? There is litter meant for bunnies made of recycled paper that is very soft that they might prefer. If you stick with the litter box I would suggest putting one in each corner. Then figure out which one they use the least (hopefully not at all) and remove that. Continue the process until you only have 1. Make sure to place them in the litter box if you catch them not using it. There's not too much you can do other than keep a very close eye on them when they're out.

Ferrets are basically still wild animals.  Perhaps they don't like the feeling of loose kitty litter, and prefer their natural habits of elimination.

Hopefully you can get some useful advice from other ferret owners.

You cant litter train ferrets when they are outside of their cage. At least I have never heard a success story. People usually end up pupping puppy pads wherever the ferrets like to "go".
