Can somebody survive a gunshot to the head?

Somebody I know is in hospital right now after shooting himself in the head playing Russian roulette. I know it's stupid, yes he's an idiot. He's on life support, it happened 5 days ago. It was a smith and Wesson revolver and it lodged into his head, about an inch from the top of his ear. Is there any chance of him surviving it? He had surgery and they removed the bullet fragments about 40 hours after he shot himself. Will he survive or not? If he does will he be his normal self? Or will he be a vegetable? How much chance is there that he will survive and be his normal self, maybe with a bit of brain damage but he will be the same? I'm not sure if the bullet touched his brain... Could it through that part of the skull or is the bone too strong? Any help would be appreciated and please don't hate or judge.

People survive gunshot wounds to the head all the time, even when they are trying to kill themselves.

Here's why. Put your finger to your head like you're trying to blow your brains out. You almost certainly pointed at your temple. If you did that with a real gun, you would have blown your eye out, not your brain. If the gun is level enough, both eyes get hit.

Please understand that this is more than being an idiot. Your friend is dangerous, and you should make new friends.

A person can survive, but i think its rare. It all depends on the person.

Yeah, it's possible. It's rare, but it is possible.
