Seems he goes out of his way to avoid that term and his team looks for excuses. Why is that?

Probably the same reason cons are always willing to call a Muslim a terrorist or a black man a thug. So far as I can tell, every mass shooting in American history has been by a nut, or nuts, with guns. Sane people do not go around shooting up crowds.

If you're speaking of Charleston, perhaps the immediate discovery of his postings with the Confederate flag and racist statements, coupled with his statements to the black people he killed 'I have to do it. You rape our women and you're taking over our country. And you have to go." would indicate he's a right-wing racist.
