Is astronomy based on physics or is physics based on astronomy?

From my point of view, physics, (or some standard physics course), has a lot to do with math, problem solving, and fundamental understanding of all of nature with only some knowledge to remember. Astronomy has little math and problem solving with also requiring little to moderate fundamental understanding of nature and a lot of knowledge to remember. Really, any math, problem solving, or understanding of nature in an astronomy course involves physics or some chemistry. Conversely, I’d say physics sparingly involves astronomy. So I want to conclude that astronomy is based on physics. However, astronomy is a space science and involves all of the structures and their behavior in space. Thus, since astronomy is a science of all of space throughout the entire history, present, and future and any natural and physical thing in space and time, physics may be based on astronomy. But I’d also say that physics is a branch of science that deals with any and everything, (matter, energy, all of space and throughout all of time), such as the physics of fossils, guitars, black holes, etc. Anything. They’re almost the same thing. But astronomy focuses on stars, planets, galaxies, etc., while physics can use natural laws and let them be applied to even man made stuff. This makes me want to believe astronomy is based on physics.

I’d like to hear others opinions. Thanks!

Physics is a subject on its own and it is a study on why certain things actually work
There is some Maths ensued of course and it also has its uses in Astronomy and Space travel
Even Chemistry has a Job
And possibly Biology

I think the two disciplines - Astronomy & Physics developed on their own, and *had* to merge at some point...

Galileo's telescope showed us a bit more what was happening in our solar system; it required mathematics to explain the interactions; and, that required leaps in the mathematics universe - people like Descartes, Huygens, Barrow, Pascal - advanced that universe enough that it allowed us to view stars and planets through the lens of physics...

You must have only taken a cursory glance at astronomy if you think it involves little maths. All the sciences depend on maths to some degree. Physics depends heavily on maths as physics is explained through the language of mathematics. Astronomy is derived from physics. You need an awful lot of physics to be an astronomer. I have no doubt that to be an amateur astronomer you do not have to be a good physicist. However, to be a professional you need a lot of physics. To a lesser extent you need some chemistry. We biologists will only become necessary if life is found anywhere other than here on Earth.
