How should I proceed with this guy I like?

So, I've liked this guy for about 6 months now, and I just recently asked him to a school dance, hoping he would say yes, because he's showed some serious signs of liking me before (like, walking to classes with me, complimenting me, joking around with me, treating me different, staring, etc. ). However, he said he couldn't go because of sports practice, but he indirectly admitted to liking me, and said sorry multiple times.

Ever since then, things have been super awkward between us. We barely know how to speak to each other, and sometimes we can be sort of rude. Recently, however, we had a really great moment after I seriously screwed up with him, and I think we're fine now. But still, I have no idea how to proceed.

I mean, he's not mad at me and I'm not mad at him, but we still don't really talk anymore, even if we are certain that we have feelings for each other. What am I supposed to do? I don't know if I should ask him out because I don't think he can handle/is ready for a relationship, based on things I've heard him say to friends. I don't want to make things more awkward, eith. So, should I just talk to him normally? Or ignore? I have no idea.

Because I think we botn realized that we were being silly, and it seems like he's making an attempt to right things between us.
