Big sites make money on free email because the more users that they have, the more they make on advertising.

free email exist because the site sells advertising space on the sides or top of the page. they may also sell their mailing list or members email address allowing online advertisers to directly send their ad into your mail box. if popups are being blocked, some sites allow certain ads to still get thru and be displayed . the sites will also offer a limited service to show you how well their service works, and offer a premir version with added features for a fee, such as extra space, or access to other services.

ads and sometimes there's a "premium" account that costs money or something like it that you might want to get after trying the free one
