Tiger Balm Recipe: Ingredients: % by weight amt. needed for 56oz. batch

    Menthol crystals 20% 9.6 oz.

    Camphor blocks 32% 15.36 oz.

    Beeswax 20% 9.6 oz.

    Petroleum Jelly 4% 1.92 oz.

Oil of Clove 8% 3.8 oz.

Oil of Cajuput 8% 3.8 oz.

Oil of Cinnamon 8% 3.8 oz.

    (optional)Ammonium Hydroxide 1 oz.

Melt beeswax and petroleum jelly in a pot until completely liquified. Remove from heat, quickly stir in camphor blocks (may help to chop or grate camphor). Add rest of ingredients, stir until consistent, and camphor has melted. Pour into permanent container, and let congeal. The above recipe will make a nice tiger balm equivalent to the commercial white stuff. If ammonium hydroxide is added, it turns red, and adds a little more heat to it.

    How it began:

A Hakka herbalist from China by the name of Aw Chu Kin left China and established a medicine shop in Rangoon in the late 1870's where he developed and sold the balm. He had two sons, Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par. After the death of his father, Aw Boon Haw marketed the balm under the brand Tiger Balm. Together with his brother Aw Boon Par, they moved the production to Singapore in the 1920's. Being a marketing genius, Aw Boon Haw made a success of selling Tiger Balm into Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Batavia, Thailand and some cities in China.

Today, Tiger Balm is owned by Haw Par Corporation, a public listed Company on the Stock Exchange of Singapore. It licensed Tiger Balm to Haw Par Healthcare Ltd to market, manufacture, distribute and sell Tiger Balm worldwide.

I do not agree with the first persons response, i dont really know what it is made of, but it comes in many differnt forms and strengths. It works really good for chapped lips or dry skin, bug bites - to stop the itching, jelly fish stings, sunburns, colds, sore muscles, you name it... The stuff works wonders, always keep some around.

    Its the Balm baby!!!
