How do the analogies of 'putting on the yoke of Christ' & 'picking up a cross & following Him' work together?

Ref

Matthew 11:29

Matthew 10:38; Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Mark 10:21; Luke 9:23; Luke 14:27

Update:

Does the 'ease of the yoke' make 'carrying a cross' easier or lighter? Is it like Footprints in the Sand... where there are only one set of footprints, it is the time that Jesus carried you?

They both refer to being willing to give up certain things in order to follow him. Sometimes his yoke is light, as it is for many of us in the U.S. who enjoy religious freedom. We're able to experience the blessings of Jesus.

Other times, following him is equivalent to being willing to die, as in picking up our cross. This is true in many countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia (among other places), where Christians are not allowed to meet together or sometimes, even leave their former religions.
