Did Jesus descend into hell???
From my Lutheran background, I was somewhat aware of the Reformation. One of the banners the reformers waved was the "5 Solas." One of which is that the religious doctrine is to be based on the Bible (not traditions or men's better ideas): "Sola Scriptura" [Scripture alone] = Scriptures are our only ultimate and infallible authority for faith and practice.
So, what is with the Apostles Creed (other than it wasn't written by the apostles)? How can the mainline denominations embrace the dogma of the Apostles' Creed when it includes the phrase, "He descended Into hell"? I've searched various translations online - I can't find the chapter & verse that says that Jesus went to hell B4 His resurrection.
Where did that come from? And WHY?

Yes
"The frequent NT affirmations that Jesus was 'Raised from the Dead" presuppose that the crucified one sojourned in the realm of the dead prior to his ressurection. (*1)This was the first meaning given in the apostolic preaching to Christ's decent into hell: that Jesus, like all men, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead. But he descended there as Savior, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there. *(2)"*(3)
The Italians have much great art on this. One of the best poetic pieces about decension into hell is Dante's Inferno...but this bit of poetry is equivaliant to the moderen day "The DeVinci Code" novel. Both are fictional that use bits of truth for entertainment.

He had to go to hell in order to keep us from it. the torture on earth was moot comparatively, and was endured so we could be prosperous in our lifetime. the cross was there so that he would be made sin, "cursed is every man that hangs on a tree"
mathew 12:39-41 (NLT)
"39But Jesus replied, "Only an evil, faithless generation would ask for a miraculous sign; but the only sign I will give them is the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40For as Jonah was in the belly of the great fish for three days and three nights, so I, the Son of Man, will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights. 41The people of Nineveh will rise up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah. And now someone greater than Jonah is here--and you refuse to repent"
