Does Saw Palmetto really work on hair loss?

It has been suggested that Saw Palmetto may block some effects of testosterone and therefore reduce male pattern hair loss, similar to the medication finasteride (Propecia®). So far there is not enough scientific evidence to support the claim.

For alternative natural treatments, massage and aromatherapy have been used with some success. In minor cases of temporary hair loss, hair growth can be stimulated by massage, since blood and oxygen flow to the scalp must be healthy in order for hair to grow.

Well first off, just talk to your doctor. He/she can run a few labs to make sure its not a medical problem, or a vitamin deficiency etc. Ask if they would check your androgen, DHT, and testosterone levels, as well as any other hormone pertinent to hair loss. You may request a referral to a dermatologist as well. A dermatologist can prescribe some meds to help, such as spironolactone and/or finasteride. But seriously, do talk to your medical doctor at least, it could be something like thyroid disease. Saw Palmetto (probably 500 mg would be fine) is known to work for some people by reducing systemic DHT. Also you can buy Nioxin shampoo at Walmart; it has ketoconazole in it which is a mild topical DHT suppressant. You need to leave it on your scalp for as long as you can while showering to get the most benefit. However, if DHT is not your problem then neither of these will help. Rogaine is supposed to help too but 8% of the users do not get results. Its kindof greasy and if this bothers you, then take a shower at night, apply before bed, then wake up in the morning and rinse your hair out. Then around 4 or 5 PM apply again, then wash your hair before bed and reapply again. It has to stay on for 4 hrs to be effective. OBTW, the walmart equivalent is just fine, same active ingredient and less expensive. I don't know about those other supplements you mentioned, however you might consider taking a B Complex supplement. Sometimes people are deficient in B12, which is not in the B complex. If that is the case, then you would need to take a B12 Sublingual (not the regular kind) about 500 mg/day. Ensure you are eating a healthy diet and drinking plenty of water. If you are taking any kind of supplement to assist in muscle growth, check side effects. I am female and had my bouts with hair loss. It can be futile! There are several kinds of alopecia out there. I just got a biopsy on my scalp, they told me its traction alopecia, so now I at least know what battle I am fighting. If things get so bad, you might do the same, but I will warn you, it kind of hurts for a few days. If things don't go well, at least you can always shave your head and still look like a guy. I don't have that option. I wish you the best of luck!

Saw Palmetto seems to be getting a lot of buzz recently and it features in a couple of high profile hair loss remedies like Provillus and Procerin.

Hair loss affects both men and women. Here are some natural remedies that can help boost hair growth: https://tinyurl.im/aH7Oe While genetics plays a role, there are other factors, including: hormonal imbalances, an underactive thyroid gland, nutrient deficiencies and insufficient scalp circulation.

I don't think it works consistently. I think that the notion that it might work is because it works on enlarged prostate, which is caused by the same response to testosterone that causes male pattern baldness. The notion is that some medications that help with prostate enlargement (Proscar) also works for hair loss.

Worth a try, though. Its cheap, non-toxic.
