Generally the courts favor the mother, and in most cases it is very difficult to take custody away from the mother. It usually involves some sort of provable mistreatment or endangerment on behalf of (or in the custody of) the mother. Often, if there is bitterness, the mother will attempt to reduce the amount of custody the other parent has just out of spite. It is important for you to follow any court orders, and to comply with whatever visitation schedule is agreed upon. Also, I believe at a certain age (14?) the children can choose which parent they wish to live with. This, of course, would still have to go through the court system.

Your wife didn't divorce you on a whim because she was having a bad day. You must have done something terribly wrong. I think it is a little too late. I don't know of anyone who has taken their ex-husband back after going through a divorce.

I dont know the reason she left you, but the one true person that can really help you out is Jesus. Ask him for help. He knows your heart better than anyone else. If you did something bad in the relationship, let her know how sorry you are. No one is perfect to not be able to forgive someone else. Confide in God, He says, ask and you shall receive.
