One traditional way is to sit very still with no movement other than your breath. Then concentrate your mind only upon your breathing. If thoughts creep in, just return to focus upon your breath. In time, your mind will become still.

You listen to your mind all day, does it make you feel more peaceful? Probably not. You quiet your mind so you can hear and expereince things you otherwise could not. But here is the trick, it is very very hard to silence your mind. So, most people make a compromise. One technique is to just to pay much attention to your thought, just let them float by. The other is to over-whelm your brain with something else, like a chant, so there is no room to think. I meditate and it feels good. Having a quiet mind is happy. Try it.

What I do, is at night when everything is quiet, I lie down flat on the carpet, spread both arms and legs out, do breathing excersises and stare at the textured white celing, wile thinking about..nothing at all. Simply just exsamining the textures.
Now this altimatly results in falling asleep lol but once you get the rigning in your ears, the fussy pins/needles feeling in your body and that shift in perception, you know you've gotten to the right place

Picture in your mind a black ball that fills your mind. Any thought causes a streak of white to cut into the ball. Concentrate on keeping the ball solid black. It is hard at first but will get easier to do as time goes on.

Try to think in images, and not words. Words are how we normally think, but it makes for noisy meditation. Move past words - meditate on a scenario instead, one that is visual.

I imagine that i'm in a white, silent room and the white walls just smear into infinity, the room becomes infinitely long and white, then i focus on my breathing, what it would look like if i could see my breath, and what it looks like inside my lungs. Good luck!

It just takes practice to do it. What works for me is I put on a CD of light rain, something not real distracting then start. There are many ways to do it. What works for one doesn't necassarily work for another. Just keep trying you will find what works for you.

i dont meditate but have trouble sleeping. i imagine static like on a tv. it helps me.
