Is heat or ice better for a muscle sprain?

This particular sprain is in the back of my neck.

Ice is better to use at first. It increases the blood circulation to the area, decreases inflamation and has a numbing effect on the pain. Heat may feel good but it can actually increase the inflamation in the acute phase. Heat is better for muscle spasms and arthritis or may be used 72 hrs after the inflamation has subsided.

That's a good question, it all depends on the sprain, because heat is not good for some and ice is not good on certain sprains, who knows.

The ice will help with swelling, but I find that heat usually works better for the pain. You could try alternating.
