Is it possible to have your laptop not go on standby when closed?

I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 Running XP SP2 and I'd like to hook my laptop up to a monitor, mouse, and keyboard and run it while closed. Is this possible, and if so how can it be accomplished?

Update:

These replies totally make sense, but that's not working unfortunately. When I close the lid, the fans stop running and the monitor I have it attached to goes blank.

Update 2:

Any other thoughts?

You will need to go into the BIOS and Change the setting that is telling it to go into Suspend or Standby (it will usually say Suspend in the BIOS) You will need to turn off your laptop and turn it back on. As soon as it starts to trun on you will need to start pressingone of the following keys. The usual keys to get into a BIOS are 1 of the following F10; F8; Tab; Delete; F1; and very rarely F4

You will need to press one of these keys to get into the BIOS you will need to press 1 key at a time repeatedly ( if it starts to beep then wait and start again) until it lets you into the BIOS. If a key does not work then turn off your laptop then try another key. you will need to figure out the rest of the Bios yourself because every bios is different. if you want you can E-mail me personally and list the options in your BIOS so i can help you further

there could be a very good reason your laptop does not do this but my laptop will however not go on standby when i close it but see here is the problem heat rises up from the keyboard of the laptop which you might not know about and especially when it is running this heat needs to escape and my instructions for my laptop says you are supposed to wait 10 min after you turn off the laptop to close it in order for the heat to escape so it does not damage the lcd screen i hope this makes sense to you

    Yes,

    1. right click on your desktop and then click "properties"

    2. Click on the "Screensaver" tab at the top

    3. Click on the "Power" tab on the lower right.

    4. Click on the "Advanced" tab at the top

    5. You should then have a line that reads "when I close my computer. Click on the down arrow to "do nothing"

you want to use an external screen? It should just work if you hit the view on external screen button. then after its displaying properly it shold be ok to close it.

Otherwise check in the settings menu> power settings, it might be listed in there.

Right click on your desktop, select properties>Screen Saver>Power>'Advanced' Tab

You will see a menu of options for "When I close the lid of my portable computer:"

Open the pulldown menu and select "Do Nothing"

That should do it for you.

definite in homestead windows 7, bypass for your administration panel (commence-administration panel), click 'device and upkeep' then bypass to capacity options. on the "decide on capacity plan" web page, replace the alternative "pick what replacing the lid does"
