Can I choose a resolution setting that does not show up on my display properties?

I have a Dell Inspiron 4100 running XP SP2. I want to connect it to a widescreen monitor whose native resolution is 1680 x 1050. The only resolution options I see under my Display Properties are 800x600, 1024/768, 1280x1024, and 1400x1050. I don't need a resolution as high as 1680x1050, but I would like to have at least a 16:9 setting so that everything isn't stretched out. Is it possible to do this, or are my resolution options totally limitted by my graphics card?

Yes you can. there is a program called Powerstrip that allows you to tweak your settings. but be careful with it or you can severly damage your equipment.

The the display properties show what the maximum resolution is for that card. I wouldn't try any third part tools to expand it. It could crash your system.
