Numbers 35:11-27 and potential trouble for Dick Cheny!?

Numbers 35:11-27 is another one of those Biblical laws that seems, well, a tad outdated. But then I'm an atheist.

How do those who take the Bible as the literal word of god think about these commands?

See the whole passage played out in Lego here:

As one who does take the Bible as the literal word of God (at least those parts of it that are not CLEARLY allegorical or symbolic), I would say that the Law here is simply defining the difference betweem manslaughter and murder. - The death penalty for murder, and imprisonment for manslaughter (the city of refuge would be a type of imprisonment) - much like what is common in many countries today.

When reading the Bible though, you must also read the entire Bible, not just a portion, so in the context of the WHOLE Bible you can see clearly that God establishes government for the purpose of making laws to punish evildoers and reward the upright.

The passage in Numbers is the way God told the Isrealites to handle murder and manslaughter - it was written to a particular people at a particular place in time, but with a general application for all peoples and all times.
