Was Bryant Gumbel out of line re: Winter Games comments?

http://blogs.wizbangblog.com/2006/02/bryant_gumbel...

===========================================================

"Finally, tonight, the Winter Games. Count me among those who don't like them and won't watch them...Because they're so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world's greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention. Try not to point out that something's not really a sport if a pseudo-athlete waits in what's called a kiss-and-cry area, while some panel of subjective judges decides who won...So if only to hasten the arrival of the day they're done, when we can move on to March Madness -- for God's sake, let the games begin."

===========================================================

Update:

I think it's OK if he doesn't like the Winter Olympics because of the particular sports, but it sounds as if he had an agenda with regards to the lack of black participants and/or just wanted to bash the GOP.

What do you think?

    I think he is just a bitter little freak, why is it that someone who has a skill in a winter sport isn't a "True Athlete". Let's see Bryant do a triple lutz and then maybe he can talk.(Once he gets the skate dislodged from his back side.) Also- maybe he should try spending a winter in a cold climate like Minnesota, then he would realize that the fact that these athletes do anything in this cold weather is amazing! (By the way, it's -10 here)

    I have no problem with Bryant Gumbel expressing his editorial comments regarding the Winter Olympic Games. However, too often people let the media dictate how they should think or make judgements before all sides of a story have been presented. Do I think these winter Olympic Game participants are great athletes? Some are, and some are not. What I can say with certainty is that these Olympians are some of the best at their chosen discipline. Ski Ariels, Figure Skating, Slalom Skiing all require a specific skill set that takes years to craft and become good at. As for his comments regarding black athletes, one athlete won a gold medal in speed skating, Herchel Walker used to be a very valuable member of the four man Olympic bobsled crew. So there are athletes out there, and yes Bryant some of them are black, but don't fault the Olympics due to a lack of participation. So just behold the Olympics for what they are, an exhibition of games that unite countries around the world. Watch, or don't watch, it's the olive branch for humanity.

    You know, i do think what he said is a bit out of line. The lack of black participants in the winter games is just that, thier own choice. What Mr. Gumbel fails to recognize is that the Olympics are for a pretty diverse crowd of athletes. The fact that you rarely see blacks on the snow or in the water is primarily due to popular opinion of that culture.

    The bottom line here is they just don't care about skiing or swimming like they do about Basketball. If there were just one "Michael Jorden" of skiing this perception might change.

    Saying that winter Olyimpians are not athletes is a complete joke, sure there are a few events that are strange to some Americans such as curling, however the Olympics are not based on soley on American popularity. Try telling the Russians that figure skating is a joke and that the participants are not athletes at all. Many of the worlds best winter Olympians overcame huge obstacles and made huge sacrafices to compete in one event that would define their lives.

    Olympians are in it for glory while Basketball players are in it for cash. The Basketball player gets paid when they loose.

    Bryant Gumbel pays to have the white kid around the block shovel his sidewalk so he can go to work without getting his loafers wet and tell the world how ignorant he really is.

    The winter games envolves more white people because it doesn't snow in africa or jamaica, etc. Not too mention most winter sports cost more money than a pair of sneakers and a basketball. So, yes if you want to look at it like that, then yes the winter games are for rich white people.

    Of course he is looking forward to the african round ball competition in March, what ***** isn't?

    Somebody could remind him that in Superbowl XL, one of the coaches threw his little red hanky on the field, and everybody stood around and waited while a subjective referee, tried to decide from the instant replay whether or not the ball carriers arm was in the right position for him to have advanced the ball to the goal line. After much consideration he awarded the points.

    Doesn't sound like he had any sort of agenda. He was just comparing the percentage of blacks present at both events. No bashing involved.

    As a black man, I want nothing to do with the Winter Olympics. Whitey can have it! I don't like the damn cold!

    I think people shouldn't get bent out of shape whenever someone in the public eye says something stupid.

    I agree with him on the panel of judges comment.
