I'm from Louisiana and I was just wondering what you thought about this?
Should the rest of the nation be expected to allow their hard earned tax money to go to rebuilding the city of New Orleans when very little is being done first to improve and strengthen the levee system that surrounds the bowl that is New Orleans.....does that make any sense to you?!?!?!

yep, it makes sence.
1) Katrina was a fluke. It is something that engineers expect to see once every 100-200 years. No reason to waste time & resources planning for such a rare occasion. It would cost more to plan for that event than to rebuild.
2) New Orleans is a very important port city because of its access to the Mississippi river. Lots of shipping to midwestern states.
3) There is too much pride in our government to ignore one of our own cities when billions of our tax money goes to helping other countries deal with similar tragedies.
4) There is a lot of money to be made in the new New Orleans. This is a chance to adjust zoning laws to attract new businesses.
5) The failure to respond exposed massive city corruption that will be corrected so that the city will have a second chance to prosper instead of being dragged down by red tape. This will also attract more businesses to the city.
If America was to abandon every city that was struck by tragedy these cities would not exist today:
Washington, D.C. - War of 1812
San Francisco - Earthquake
Chicago - Fire
Atlanta - Civil War

absolutely not. I feel like what happened to all those millions that were raised to help to rebuild the city? Telethon after telethon and show after show and even all those red cross pledges. I don't think 1 dime should come from tax payers unless they chooses to donate. I mean where is all that money that was donated? Was that not enough? And a huge percentage of the people that used to live there, don't live there anymore. They have new homes in new cities. So why should our taxpaying dollars pay for the rebuilding of homes when owners aren't coming back?

No, this doesn't make sense to me. To rebuild an area that is below sea level seems to be going against nature. The hurricane was awful for the people who lived in New Orleans, but I think it may have been one way for nature to right the wrong that humankind did by building in an area that was not meant to be built on.

I'd rather my tax money go to rebuilding an American city in a country that I live in than fund a war that kills my people in a region of the world that I come from.
