I have a local DSL ISP. Going on 1-week road trip with laptop – best way to stay connected?

Without using WiFi or running up long distance charges. I just want to plug my laptop into the phone port in the hotel/motel.

If you travel a lot, it's not a bad idea to subscribe to a major dial-up service in case you can't find access in the facilities that you are staying at. Earthlink, NetZero and others usually have local access numbers just about anywhere where you won't be charged for LD calls.

In the very near future, most of the cell phone services will offer Internet access through a cell phone. Verizon already offers wireless high speed access (although not really high speed) through their cell phone services.

  • Well, your local connection is going to be of no help if all your trying to get is internet access. Just use the hotels connection for that.

If your interested in actually accessing your computer, you could download Filezilla and set up your computer to be an FTP server - that way you could browser your computer. Otherwise creating a virtual private network might work.
