I assume you are talking about a garden pond. My wife and I have one and the rewards far outweigh all the work put into it. The options for building are to your imagination. Ther are a vast amount of sites on garden ponds - too many to mention.
Just search around and you will find tons of info. Once you build it - the sound of the water, pond plants, feeding the fish - just relaxing beside it - it's just to awesome to explain! My heartfelt recommendation - go for it!!!!!!!

you can rent a skid loader with teeth for about $150/day. Rent it saturday and they'll probably let you use it for free on sunday. if you have access to a tractor with a turning plow, work up the soil first then use the skid loader to remove the earth. a tractor with a FEL can substitutue for the skid loader.

Yes, I built one many years ago. Requires a lot of engineering skill & thought. Overflow, width of dam, available water, etc etc.
