If the US had a state religion, which one should it be?

I frequently hear calls from certain quarters to remove the restrictions against separation of church and state, or to repeal the establishment clause ("Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ...").

I wonder, if this was done, which religion, of all the sects and cults in the US, would prevail in the ensuing contest?

Update:

Im_No_Virgin, I am somewhat surprised that you have not heard of this, at least if you live in the US. There was an immense meeting and rally of religious and political leaders last summer that I listened to on CSPAN in amazement. Tom Delay was there. Speaker after speaker stood up to call for the removal of the principal of separation of church and state, and repeal of the establishment clause. These statements were met with cheers, and thunderous applause and accolades. It was stated that these principles of the US government were the gravest mistakes made by the founding fathers. People cheered and clapped. The recall of ALL US judges (10s of thousands) was advocated, so that a judiciary that would rule the "right" way could be installed instead. And the congressional leaders there, including Tom Delay, made speaches agreeing with all this.

Update 2:

Take a look at what some are saying here on Y!A

Update 3:

There is a lot of material here on Y!A about the separation of church and state, but look at some of the answers on this one for example:

And furthermore Craig, thats why it must never be allowed to happen. Ever.

Update: To the pentacostalist. Im going to try to not attack anyone, and hopefully get some straight answers here. OK, suppose it was your religion that was the mandated state religion. What about the rest of us? What about other religions? What about say Presbyterians, or LUtherans? Buddhists? Jews? What about us? Are we forced to practice your religion? Just curious.

Who is calling for the removal and/or restriction upon the First Amendment? This is my area of profession and I'd be curious to see the arguments for such incomprehensible action.

It already has one. It's called the evolution theory.

    OPM,

Stop associating evolution with science. I have nothing against science, but evolution doesn't fit that definition.

It is something you have to believe by faith without proof. That my friend, is a religion.

Here are some of the things you have to have faith in to believe in evolution. These things are unprovable by science:

    1. Matter created itself

    2. Energy created itself

    3. Matter can organize itself into complex systems

    4. Non-Living material can become living.

    5. Chemicals can create themselves.

    6. Living things can change into completely different species.

There are dozens of other things, but these are the biggest. Have fun worshipping matter which is the god of evolution.

It has one, it is called Capitalism. Evolution and Science are certainly not State religions here. There are two reasons for that, one ignorance and two it isn't a religion.

I think it _should_ be Humanism or Pantheism but I know as well as you do that if it came to a vote, Christian Fundamentalism would win out. That is why it will never happen.

Agnosticism. That way, people who are Christian can still believe in Christianity and practice Christian beliefs, and so can everyone else. But they'd just say they're "Agnostic" instead. :)

    It should be Apostolic Pentecostal.
