What is your best experience with the beer-can chicken such as preparation methods?

do you use the can or a store bought device?

Update:

to date, I have used a lemon/lime soda instead of beer. I have used iced tea as well and then even rubbed the bird with a dry iced tea mix. Finally, I like using white wine too after pouring our beer or soda.

Update 2:

I have cooked in the oven as well as on the grill.

I can't believe there aren't more people interested in this

I have used a beer can and a simple ($10.) beer can holder and had great results with both. The holder definitely gives more stability to the chicken. I mix and use the Memphis Rub from Steven Raichlen's book, rubbing a generous amount on the oiled chicken (helps hold the rub), inside the cavities and adding some to the beer can. I have made beer can chicken on the grill many times and just recently in the oven, both produce flavorable, moist chicken. (no brining required.)

One 4-5 lb. chicken, 350 degree oven or grill, 2 hours.

The last time I made beer can chicken I served it with a side-dish of onion, poppy seed, cabbage, noodle which has a slightly sweet flavor that worked well with the spicy beer can chicken.

I just open the beer and put the chicken over it. Its absolutely the best! very juicy! They sit there pretty well, just keep checking it. You can also buy little holders at sporting goods stores like Dick's or Cabellas.
