Moral dilemma?

If of the questions you have answered is up for voting would you vote for your answer as best answer(and get the 10 points) or someone elses answer ?

Would it be greedy or mean spirited to vote for yourself?

I'll vote for mine if I think it is best, and I almost always think it is. It is not wrong as long as you honestly believe yours is the best.

We're discussing this in the forum, you're welcome to join in :-)

Personally, when I first started in Y!Answers I thought that it was ethically wrong to be able to vote for one's own answer. As you say, it felt greedy or selfish, even ridiculous.

But then I saw some _awfully wrong_ answers being chosen, and I learnt about the old open questions left in Limbo because they ended in a tie.

So now I check all my old answers and vote when they go into voting. That does not mean that I always vote for my own answer, because I've found much better answers sometimes. In addition, occasionally I add a second answer to old one-answer-only questions just to bring them to voting, and of course in that case I go back and vote for the good answer, not for mine (which just says "Vote for the other one").

I've received several +10 points for questions when my vote was the only one, which is quite not-rewarding. But I have a clear conscience because I answered and voted to the best of my ability, and that at least I cared about the question when neither the Asker nor the other Answerers did.

I would vote for the answer that bests answers the question, be it yours or someone else's.

I have no hesitation - having perused all answers in going for which *I* think is best.

Perhaps 50% of the time that'll be mine, 50% not - :-)but I feel comfortable being allowed to (fairly, as much as I'm capable) make that decision.

And after all, it's only One Vote!

(Sometimes I abstain - as I CAN'T see past my own bias, so then I leave it for others to settle).

What is the value of points?

I would say it is better to evaluate how good your answer is/was by seeing how others vote on it. Besides, surely there is code to stop people voting for themselves?

    Source(s): Just my opinion.

Go with your gut... be honest with yourself. Wouldn't you realllllly know if someone had a better answer than you?

Better yet: (Please note: I'm a Y! Answers Virgin until now - literally surfed on over from your 360 page... so I don't know all the "rules")

... Could you call it a "draw" and take 5 points each? :)

I'd vote for mine because I WANT TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER MORE QUESTIONS AND ASK MORE QUESTIONS! I've already hit my limit for the day for asking questions! I'm Mad! LOL!

Not if the only answer you agree with is the one that you gave.
