I have a very simple question about polyester knit fabrics.....?

If you notice, clothes like tee shirts and other clothes made of knit material stretches...usually the material is made of 50%polyester and 50%cotton...neither of these fabrics alone are elastic..so why then do they stretch as a blended fabric?.....also, as a bonus question, if you'll notice the knit fabric will stretch alot in one direction but very little, if any, in the direction 90 degrees to it....why is that?....any fabric brainiacs out there...I gotta know this.....~

not claiming to be a textile brainiac.

I think its because of the "knots in the knit". Fiber doesn't elongate -- but the shapes of the knots do. How does that sound for an explanation?

Source(s): My guess is as good as yours probably.
