Wireless connection - Is this stealing?
It seems I am picking up my neighbor's wireless connection on my laptop. I am wireless enabled through school on a T1 line. At my sister's, I can pick up her wireless connection immediately, but my neighbor's connection only shows up after I dial up...and surfing is much faster. Do I nedd to tell him about this? Or should I just enjoy the instances of faster surfing?

i think you should tell your neighbour, and offer to help pay his bill, what you are doing is stealing some of his bandwitdh, and if the both of you are on at the same time, his connection will be slower. As for the person that made the Airport comment, they give it away for free, as part of their service, its simple enough to charge for a wireless connection by giving every user a unique key...

Well, I'm not exactly sure what laws apply to this type of subject, I mean I'm not sure you can call listening to an unencrypted network stealing, but that's just the point, if he didn't want anyone to use the connection other than himself, then he should put some type of encryption on it. Personally I don't think its stealing, unless the law says it is, just because assuming he can read, its pretty easy to set up a router and network with a type of encryption in under 15 minutes.

My internet connection comes VIA wireless from my neighbor. I help him pay his cable bill every month in turn. Every now and then I pick up my other neighbor's signal by accident because my modem is set to pick up the strongest signal. It doesn't bother anyone and if I catch it I switch back. Tell your neighbor and see what they say, they might not mind if you surf, but not download, or ask you not to do that at all.

It's not stealing. If it were, every airport, restaurant or office building would find a way to charge people for the service. You are very honest for asking though.

I think you know the answer. You should tell your neighbor that they should put up a firewire or password to protect their computer.

It is stealing, obviously.
If I live in an apartment, and my water is free, is it stealing if you connected your hose to my faucet and started using it? Obviously.
