Why does everyone assume Canadians speak French??

Because people think that since we're "north" we are like greenland or something. they are dumb, that's why! and for the french, thats also dumb too...the person before said that 50% of canada speaks french? you must be kidding! with Quebec being the only main pocket of french speakers, with scattered francophones it is not half of canada!

French fur traders and missionaries were probably the first Europeans in Canada. I suppose many people have that image stuck in their heads. But I live too close to Canada to think it's full of French speakers. Hockey fans, yes... But those are pretty much all over Michigan too.

Why Canadians do not find it a compliment to assume all speak french? Is something wrong with the french language?

The term French Canadian might lend itself to the assumption

1st: that is not an ubiquitous assumption

2nd: it can be seen as a compliment to assume that all Canadians are Francophiles

3rd: Something like 50% of Canada is Francophone, isn't it?

Probably for the same reason that most people assume kangaroos hop around suburban streets in Australia.
