Three men walk into a hotel..?
Three men walk into a hotel looking for a room. The receptionist tells them that there is only one room, and that it cost $30. They pay $10 each, and head to their room for the night.
Later, the receptionist realizes that he over charged them by $5, so he gives the money to the bellhop instructing him to return it to the 3 men.
The bell hop, on his way to the room, realizes that there is no way to split the bill 3 ways, puts $2 in his pocket and doesn't tell the men about it, rationalizing that he is doing them a favor.
Now, here's the riddle. After getting their money back, each of the men has spent $9, totaling $27 spent for the room. The bellhop put $2 in his pocket to bring the total to $29. What happened to the last dollar?
The correct answer came from Mr Repartee.
The answer given by ranjith, and serveral others is incorrect. They did not pay 9.33 each. They paid $9.00 each ($10 - $1 refund), for a total of $27.00. Minus $2 for the bellhop equals $25.00, the total for the room.

Well, the dollar didn't really disappear. In fact, there's no logic to this puzzle at all. The second to last sentence confuses the mind such that you can't think of the answer. For those of you who are confused, the answer is: The room still costs $25, and the bellboy got $2, and they each got one back, totalling $3. There's the $30. So, really, the hotel clerk should be arrested for not giving back change in the first place.

There's no missing dollar. The last part of the riddle was just to create a confusion.
1. $30 paid
2. $5 retured by clerk
3. $2 pocketed by bell-hop (5-2=$3)
4. $1 returned to each man (Total $3)
5. $9 spent by each man (Total $27)
Each man paid $10 and got back $1. The bellhop pocketed $2.
Total = 10 x 3 + 1 x 3 - (5 -2)
= 30 + 3 -3
= 30

When you multiply 9 by 3 you get 27. My version: 3 men walk into a hotel and buy a room, paying $10 each. Now, where in the world, can you get a hotel room for $30 ? The cheapest one I've seen advertised recently was $65, and that is a rock-bottom price. So anyone that could get a hotel room for $30 is gonna get a dump. Period. They were lucky to get walls and a roof.

Actually ranjith, got the answer 99% right. if you multiply 9.33 by three and add 5 dollars you'd only have 29.99$. The bellhop was a pretty clever fellow, but the real question is who stole the last penny, and how many pennies has he stolen so far? And has he already stolen a penny from me? I'm never stopping at another hotel for the rest of my life!!!!

The 2 dollars the bellboy stole is part of the 27 dollars. The 3 that the men got back makes $30.

The three men paid a total of $27 (the $ sign goes BEFORE the number). The manager paid the bellhop $2. (Or, more accurately, the bellhop stole $2). Nothing is missing. (Except what the bellhop stole from the manager.) PS - I really hope you're not out of 6th grade yet!

Cost for each : 30$
Return to waiter : 5$
Cost to hotel : 25$ (8.33$ per each)
and each got 1$ back
So, they paid : 9.33$ not 9$
Now (9.33$ * 3) + 2$ = 30$
