Need a little help here - what is 'communications'?

In a job description, it says experience in 'communications'. Now, i'm not so sure what this means. What sector(s) constitute as 'communications'? Is it restricted to producing literary things, such as websites, pamphlets? Or more....?

Update:

You asked for the context, the other requirement is (and this I understand):

•Experience of delivering wide ranging communications strategies for internal and external audiences

Update 2:

Um... sorry, the answers I got still aren't clear enough.

I'm not sure about the context but I think they are referring to things similar to what is covered in a typical communications degree in college. These are people who are interested in going into broadcasting - through various media, as on-air talent and the production thereof.

Ironic that "communications" would be left ambiguous.
