Do you think that obese people can do anything about their weight?

I've noticed that a lot of obese people are often eating high-fat foods and desserts and drinks at restaurants, yet I hear in the media that being obese is something you are born with and can't help. I think that the main reason that I stay thin is because I eat healthy and workout 4-5 days/week. Do you think that obesity can be helped by eating healthy and working out? Or any other ways (positive thinking, perhaps)?

Update:

I asked this question to get opinions, and apparently wholelotta took it really personally. This is/was an opportunity to explain why obese people have problems losing weight.

What is this drug that causes you to gain 125 lbs so quickly?

I don't know that its healthy to eat part of and appetizer, no meal, and some cake though. I usually avoid appetizers and desserts altogether.

I think that some obesity can be avoided by a healthy life style (food and exercise).

I also think that some people are predisposed for obesity.

In addition to that...fresh fruits and veggies are expensive. Lean meats are expensive. It is much cheaper to feed a family of five at taco bell than it is to go buy a nice cut of meat, some lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and onions, asperagus and carrots.

Not to mention that many people that eat this way are working overtime or two jobs to make ends meet. The exercise they get is probably job related.

Therefore..I think a lot (not all) of obesity can be linked to poverty and enhanced by genetics, exhaustion, habits and hopelessness.

I am super obese (above morbidly obese) in part because of some medicine I was on about 10 year ago which packed on 125 lbs in a year. I have talked to others who've been on this same drug and they also gained massive weight without changing their eating habits or exercise habits.

I wonder how you would feel if that happened to you?

I work out 4 hours a week. I eat slim-fast for 10 of my 19 meals a week. I am on diet pills. Insurance companies don't want to pay for weight-loss surgeries even if you're on the verge of death.

As far as eating desserts goes, if I am going out to a place where I like the desserts, I will often not have a meal. I'll nibble on the appetizer platter and then have dessert. You'd see me and think "Look at that fattie eating cake" and not know that I had no meal AND I'm sharing the cake with at least one other person. So don't judge on appearances alone unless you know the full story behind what you're seeing.

There are many illnesses and medications that can cause obesity and make it impossible for people to lose the weight. Some overweight people are overweight due to their diet and can lose the weight if they eat healthier and exercise. Some are overweight due to genetics, it is still possible to lose weight, but can be quite a bit harder for them. Some are overweight because of the way they were taught to eat by their parents. If they change their diet and exercise, they should have success in losing weight.

Most people do not have the time to work out 4-5 days out of the week and it has become easier to stop and buy fast food when people are tired and don't feel like cooking. Not only obese people eat poorly and don't exercise. Unfortunately their genetic make up causes them to be obese, but it does not mean that they are any unhealthier than a thinner person that eats the same diet and doesn't get exercise.

What there is nothing you can do about is stupidity, ignorance, intolerance and prejudice. The people that "Hate" fat people and make obnoxious comments about them are just ignorant and there is no cure for their illness except for possibly becoming obese themselves. It would be a much better and caring world if each person had to experience every type of prejudice and hatred in their lifetime. Trust me, people would change the way they think very quickly if they had to live through the prejudice and hatred that they show to other people.

Genetics is a very important factor in determining the disposition of person's body to accumulate fat (the endomorphic body type).

Also there are other social factors that add to this. It is believed that overweight people with the same skill are passeed up over leaner people in the workplace. This ultimately results in obese and overweight people having to take up certain jobs that bring them less money to by healthy food also less time to exercise.

Some of it is hygenes. I come from an obese family, and I see them eating nothing but salads and they're always working out, yet they stay obese. It depends on hormones, but if you think that you can't do anything about it, you'll never be thin, becuase I know some obese people can do stuff about their weight, but not all of them can, so don't be judging.

Of course, if they go on a very serious weight loss program, it can happen. Don't eat fatty foods or sweets at all. Eat salads regularly. Go to a gym and work out, they can suggest a weight loss program that can help.

I think in a lot of people the body has a way to seek its level and it is hard to fight. I fell sorry for those who want to loose weight but just can't

Fitness is a lifestyle, however metabolism is dictated by your thyroid. An underactive thyroid creates obesity.Medication can correct this issue.A more complex way to deal with this issue is through gastric bypass surgery.
