I'm writing a letter to a person serving the army...?
It is for a school assignment, and I have no idea where to begin. Any suggestions?
The odd thing is I'm not a US citizen. I live here, legally, mind you, but I'd feel weird writing "Thank you for giving me my freedoms."
But I'll still use that. Thank you for your wonderful ideas!

I just want to say that I'm glad you are doing this for some serviceman somewhere. I'm in the RAF and joined up shortly after I finished school. It was my first time away from my family for more than two weeks and felt very homesick for ages. My friends and family sent me letters while I was at basic training and they really kept me going. I agree that you shouldn't mention the school project thing, but take an interest in the guy/girl you are writing to and tell them some interesting things that you are up to. It'll make their day, believe me! Good luck for the future and I hope you get to write to someone you'll become good friends with!! :-D

Tell them a little bit about yourself.
DON'T tell them you're writing because it's a school assignment. Take a genuine interest in wanting to know more about them.
Ask them questions which are important to you regarding what they are doing and feeling.
Tell them how much you appreciate the fact that all your freedoms come from their efforts.
Don't forget a return address. :^)

My hubby is in the army and he says when I write him to talk about anything other than what there doing and what it's like there and things like that, they want to hear normal stuff to get there mind off of what there going through...ask him what his favorite food is, color is..ask him what music he listens to...any thing but whats going on there, they need a dose of normal every now and then, this is just what my hubby told me, hope it helps...God bless

Just talk to them the way you would meeting someone for the first time, tell them about yourself, where your from, your age, family, intrests, and just keep it simple and upbeat.

You could ask them where they are from, what were the reasons they joined the Army, what do they like about it/dislike.
