What causes mold on my Terra cotta planters?

I have terra cotta planters that keep getting a film of white mold. If I leave it, it eventually turns green. I fear this is bad for the plants. How can I stop the mold from re-appearing?

This is due to the water you put in them. You can stop this mold from growing by cleaning the pots then giving them a good spray of mold inhibitor or clear spray paint.

The mold inhibitor can be bought at most hardware stores. It is used in paint often used in bathrooms or kitchens.

I suggest the clear coat. If you like matte surfaces, make sure you don't buy glossy paint. Doing this will help your plants retain water longer as the terra cotta doesn't "wick" the water away.

The mold comes from a combo of moisture and the soil in the pots. If they are terra cotta, they should be oven proof, so you should kill the mold lurking in the soil by putting the whole pot with soil in the oven at several hundred degrees for around half an hour at least. But I guess that you want to save the plants, huh?
