im not sure if that first answer was clear so...........
Anything in the emperiment that you have control for. for example say you are testing how fast water boils at a certain temperature. the temperature is the controlled variable because you can change the temperature yourself by increasing or decreasing the heat... the controlled variable is independent. If you had to make a chart or graph, it would be on the x axis... im not sure if thats any clearer

a controlled variable is the only one that you are not adding anything to it, it remains as it is to test the difference of the other when a substance is acted upon the other variables
