Why is a rabbit's foot considered to be good luck?

Didn't seem to be very lucky for the rabbit...

Man was particularly impressed by the animal's swiftness, which was due to its powerful hind legs. The rabbit became a sign of good fortune, and its hind foot became a treasured amulet."
