Why dont "americans" get a proper nationality name?

Because the country itself is called United States of AMERICA. If you say 'American' it means one coming from the continent of North America, residing/originating within from the borders of the USofA.

I mean it's perfectly logical to call Americans Americans. You don't hear the people of The Republic of Macedonia wanting to be called the Republicians??

American is more convenient and it IS in our name versus Peru, Canada, or Belize for example, so even though some may dislike it, one can see the logic in calling people or all things USA, American. Can't you?

Hey thats a good question. I have always wondered why they refer to the US as America, when its such a big continent with so many countries.

I've thought about this, too. I often call myself "American", simply because I'm used to it. However, it is really quite arrogant for us to reserve the adjective "American" just for ourselves. After all, the Canadians, Mexicans, Argentinians, Brazilians, and Salvadoreans are "Americans", too.

Well, "Citizens of the United States of America" is a bit cumbersome, don't you think? You wouldn't be able to trash us as effectively if you had to use our full names and titles, would you?
