How to clean and freshen a garbage disposal? Please?

I got married and my husband hasn't used his disposal in years. I never had one and that thing smells like there is something alive in it. What should I so?

There is a produce that works great which you can find in your grocery store, it is called "Disposer Care". It is a simple 4 step procedure you will find on the back of the box.

First pour some baking soda into the disposal, follow that with a cup of vinegar, let it foam for a few minutes and then follow with plenty of HOT water. That should take care of it but if by some chance it doesn't, grind some lemons up in the disposal and maybe the citrus smell will be better than the smell you have now. My husband is a plumber and that is what he would recommend.

If it's really, REALLY bad, you (or hubby if he's feeling particularly macho and doesn't have plumber's crack) remove the disposal (unbolts from under the sink.) Let it dry out completely like out in the sun. Then do the lemon or baking soda thing.

Baking soda and vinegar to knock out odors, plus it's fun to watch. Also I have heard that you can put ice in it to sharpen the blades. I do not know if that is true or not. Another unverified suggestion was to only use cold water in it . Supposedly, the use of hot water causes it to expand and might cause problems.

Dump a box of baking soda down it.

Another trick is to grind up a whole lemon in it.

Short term: limes or other citrus fruit.

long term: replace it. Cleaning it is tedious and the blades are probably dull so it's not liquifying the garbage!

Lemon and vinegar . Not baking soda its a myth perpetuated by the manufactuers. http://www.pgacon.com/KitchenMyths.htm

A lemon works for normal odors, but if its that bad, you may want to dump bleach in it.

put a lemon through it or take it all apart and clean it piece by piece
