Elizabeth II was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. In 1917, before Elizabeth was born, the royal family adopted the name Windsor, after their principal castle, because their surname Wettin sounded too German for popular opinion during World War I. Wettin derived from Queen Victoria's husband Albert, who belonged to the Wettin family of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.

In 1952 Elizabeth II declared that her descendants would belong to the House of Windsor and should use the name Windsor as their surname. In 1960 the queen modified the order by allowing her descendants who do not hold royal titles to use the name Mountbatten-Windsor, which is a combination of Prince Philip's surname and the queen's surname. Without this order, all of the queen's descendants would bear their father's surname Mountbatten.

In practice, descendants of the queen such as the Duke of York use the name Mountbatten-Windsor, despite being members of the royal family. As is common amongst British nobles, Prince Andrew, Earl of Wessex, uses his title as a surname, so he is known as Andrew Wessex. Similarly, Princes William and Harry use their father's title as their surname, and go by William Wales and Harry Wales. Under the 1960 order, Prince Charles's surname is Windsor, though he too uses the name Mountbatten-Windsor or his title Prince of Wales.

Windsor is the family name from the house that 'i think her parents' bought back in the days before time being ... i think DON'T quote me on that I should know BUT i am farad i don't and quite frankly don't really care much. Frankly i do think she is doing a good job after all she can't say NO to often as it's a 24/7/365.24 job and SHE/THEY have to be good .... it's not a job I'd do even for all the money(which she can't spend by going to McDonald's or KFC (what ever). Can they I MEAN can you be good AS long as they have. On monitor every minute of the day month years....

Source(s): My own opinion as I am not really a royalist BUT it is a job i do not want ... (money 's OK ) They cannot ever retire can they ?

The official royal surname is Windsor, but the young princes use the surname Wales at school. Prince Charles didn't get his father's surname (Mountbatten), but I think he still uses it in a hyphenated version of his name.

I don't think surnames are very important among royalty. After all, they're already set apart from everyone else.

The royal house is named Windsor. Prince Philip's name is Mountbatten, so Charles' proper surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.

The "British" royal family is really a German organisation cleverly disguised by some changes of surname in recent history.

The current Queen is the daughter of George VI and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. His surname was originally von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha.

Prince Charles's father is Prince Philip and his surname was originally von Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksberg.
