yahoo is a website where they dont take money for any registration.then how do they get money.?

i am thinking of starting a new website.i just want to know the different ways to get money from a website.i know we can get money through ads.but there is a limit for that.the otherway is through charging an amount for using your website(registration).but sites like yahoo,google etc are providing lots of features for free.then how do they make money.

Mianly through advertising.  Not pop-up adds and such (although those do pay too), but search advertising.  The order the results are listed in when you search for a topic depends on how much that website is willing to pay yahoo per click.  For example if you search for lawyer and click on the first webpage listed, you have just made yahoo over 30 dollars.  They also DO charge people for "premium" services (both yahoo and google).

this section they generate profit through ads and payment from advertisers. also when you search for questions the first two mostly contain links to related materials that are not questions. other parts of yahoo like email have premium services that they charge. then there's yahoo auctions and website hosting that they charge money. and dont forget their search engines.

Alomst entirely advertising, there are a number of companies who will organise advertising for you. As you get bigger you can charge more for advertising. As for any more money most places rely on donations
