Let's bring this issue back down to earth. How about some intelligent discussion?

We need to reconsider the criteria of what makes a person a legal citizen of the United States. Other countries, like Japan and Kuwait, consider your family bloodlines when deciding whether you are a citizen of their country or not. No fences and no shooting(only in a redneck's wet dream) will solve this- we need enforcement of our existing laws WITHIN the country--employers and govt. hand-out agencies are the main culprits for proliferating this illegal immigration problem. It's very, very tiring to hear the banter back and forth ... accusations of 'racism' to keep people mum, sob stories about people looking for a better life, etc. etc., when we need to look away from all that bullshit and face the real problem: ILLEGAL immigration. Not immigration, /illegal/ immgration. Remember when illegal meant 'against the law'? A country without protected borders is not a country at all. If people flood in here and rape the system then that just turns the US into a sort of international midwife

Update:

sorry if your attention span can't last beyond a few paragraphs, chap:)

Update 2:

(sorry, this bit got clipped off by the word limit when I copied it here originally):

This doesn't mean we need to go about treating 'hispanics' like dogs. We need to streamline and reorganize our bureaucracy, especially the INS. We need to grow a pair and start running the country efficiently - most politicians are more concerned with getting re-elected through their pork barrels than getting anything serious done. ILLEGAL immigration is a symptom of a larger problem, which has little to do with racism towards Mexicans. Let's stop trying to turn this into a mudslinging fest and try to look at the bigger problem!

They are here already. Why would we even try to deport them all.Regardless of whether they broke the "law".That "law" has never been enforced. So why is eveyone screaming for the cops, all of a sudden.(here comes the sob story(They have lived here for years, decades. They have children that were born here. Most have been productive members of this society. They own homes and have no ties to their home countries. It is ridiculous and silly to say,"send them packin".

Now not everyone had an opinion on this until the marches and the protesting.I would like to know why that pissed so many ppl off. They do have a right to do that.It is in our Constitution.Even if they are not citizens.

Last.I am a citizen and I don't know where some ppl got their arrogance from. There is racism involved, and if you have ever experienced racism, you would know it doesn't feel good when someone hates you just because of you ethnicity. And it is even more ****** up when they think it's funny.Maybe I expect too much from my fellow? Americans.

I don't deny that illegal is against the law. But where has the law been all this time? Lately our government has been too busy abroad trying to fix things elsewhere instead of fixing the problems it has at home. This matter has gotten out of hand and now people are blaming the illegals for something that was totally allowed!! What I don't understand is why they are being insulted and called the worst things imaginable and the ones that have been sleeping on the job get away with it!! What is done is done and I was taught that if I make a mistake or evade my responsibilities, I have to suffer the consequences, not someone else paying for something I did or didn't do. They are illegals from another country that shouldn't have to pay for our irresponsible government's mistakes.

At the root of this issue is a basic lack of respect for the law, both for those who enter the country illegally and for the businesses who hire illegal* labor.

(*INTERESTING SIDE NOTE: Did you know that this site blocks out the word "wet back" when used as one word? PC-ness sucks... :p)

Personally, I think the ultimate solution to the problem lies in targeting the businesses. Why have people come here illegally? Because they want money, and they know that many businesses will hire them despite their illegal status. If we imposed harsh enough penalties on the businesses who hire illegal labor, they would become too scared to continue the practice. With no more work and therefore no more money to be made, illegals would cross back over into Mexico of their own accord. When those 11+ million people pour over the Mexican border, Vicente Fox might wish that he had spent a little more time "mending the holes in his fence." :)

I also propose enforcing laws already in place more strictly; keep rounding 'em up and shipping them home. There isn't necessarily a need for some "national dragnet"... just do what we can and let the rest move themselves home (because of the "no more work" strategy listed above). Anyway, that's my strategy, and I'm sticking to it!

I think that the issue now is mainly that of power.

500,000 latinos in LA marching and DEMANDING citizenship for illegal immigrants, and then calling a boycott on May 1st is DEFINITELY an aggressive sign of power. The backlash is going to be a result of that. There is no way mainstream America is going to be dictated to. So, the logical retalliation is to not give them what they want, and actually take away those things that they should have never had to begin with, in order to make a strong point that they are not to be pushed around, and that they can push back HARD.

It is good that there are more people coming in and asking question with the ability to think.

The justification that illegals have a right to break laws in another countries because of some injustice in their country is just mind boggling.

Most of the ones that are defending it are the uneducated 2nd generation of legals and 1986 amnesty kids.

The name calling is just to shut one down. For many of us who know the fact it is silly but for the inexperienced young who voice there concern and try to express their opinion it is bad.

What you are saying is correct. Go though and read some of the past question, interesting reading. Kit

I agree. Businesses that employ illegal immigrants are hurting us all by driving wages down. When more workers get benefits it becomes easier and more economical for every one to get benefits by economy of scale so those companies hurt us by not giving benefits too. They also hurt us by lowering the amount of tax dollars that go back into the country while raising dependance upon social services. How about we start boycotting companies that employ illegal immigrants? Not just for one day but every day.

To be fair, anyone who is boycotting on May 1st should also refrain from relying upon social and government services for one day. No hospitals, no schools, no subsidised day care or after school programs, no school sports programs, no welfare, no food or medical aid and so on.

I think the boycott is a good start; if businesses couldn't rely on cheap, illegal labor they would have to start offering fair wages to do those tasks again. That would in turn attract American Citizens back to those jobs resulting in more Americans employed, more tax dollars generated and an improvement of our economy across the board.

I think the argument that illegals only take jobs that Americans don't want is a complete falsehood. I know there are lots of Americans who are out of work and would be happy to take jobs on farms, in hotels, in factories or plants if they offered decent wages and benefits again. The fact is companies that rely on cheap, illegal labor don't have to offer good wages to anyone, or benefits either. I remember when the janitor at my grade school could still afford to own a house, put food on the table and send his kids to college. Do you think that could happen now? I doubt it. So how about we make every day a boycott day!

How about this? This country was not ours to begin with - the ancestors of the Mexican people who are now immigrating into 'our' country lived here 10,000 years before we decided to visit this rock and make it ours - civilizations move in and out of territory all the time - boundaries is a relatively new concept in the whole scheme of humanity only 4 or 5,000 years old. In another 100 years our children could be living on reservations forced out of 'ownership' of property that ultimately belongs to NO ONE. Give up the argument, man will continue to fight over boundary issues because he lives in fear of his own survival and nothing more. Your mind-set and this question of illegal/legal immigration is a petty argument and can be reduced to nothing more than, "That's MY red firetruck!" Part of a system that you don't even realize you're functioning in. A system that OWNS things, when it's not true. You, me, him, her; we OWN NOTHING. When man - humans - begin to see themselves as small instead of the distorted view that we ARE all that is...then the fighting will cease.

I agree with a lot of your points. Many of the "illegals" are definitely an asset to our country, in terms of filling the "gaps" in employers' needs, but the huge burden put on our economy by the majority of illegal immigrants vastly outweighs this benefit. We absolutely need to regain control.

Illegal means just that. I think a signal is being sent when a new citizen prefers to enter illegally vs. the way my parents came here ... and it wasn't easy for them either but they honored laws. Those who do not respect one law will fail to do so again.
