Did you or anyone you know have an imaginary friend?
I did not but I know people that have. Some because they were lonely growing up, some really did believe they were real. One theory has to do with the ability for children to see ghosts.
If you had one, please state the reason. Serious replies only.
Thanks for all the answers! I did not expect so many.

I had an imaginary friend named Closet Roset. He lived in my parents' closet and he had a wife and kids. He wasn't human, but more similar to a muppet, though I never had a very distinct idea of what he looked like. He used to make waffles and do the dishes and the laundry.
My mom used to stay up at night after we were all in bed and clean the house, so I attributed it to Closet Roset. I don't remember ever believing wholeheartedly that he was real, but I did like the idea and I'd reassure my mom sometimes by telling her Closet Roset would take care of something.

As a teenager, I'm no official authority on this, but from what I know, it's an imagination thing. It's the same way children believe in fairy tales, they aren't grounded in what they believe is reality, an imaginary friend can be just as real as you or me, it all depends on who you talk to. I used to play imaginary friends with my younger brother/friends and we made stories that we acted out. At the age when most kids have an imaginary friend, they can't read yet, but they've heard stories. The 'friend' is the outlet for that energy. They're the characters for our minds. In any case, if you ask because you have a child who recently found an imaginary friend, it's nothing to worry about, unless they start talking about the friend killing people or coming for you in your sleep.

I remember having a imaginary friend, she was my only friend. The reason I had her is she protected me I thought. My step father use to beat me as a child and I remember after the first time I went to the hospital I had my imaginary friend come home with me. I feel now the reason I had her is because I wanted someone to love and to understand me, and no one did.

I had one. His name was George. I think I was like 7. I had a younger sister at the time, she was 5 and my mom had just had another baby. So I created George because everybody had given attention to my baby sister so I had my own friend to talk to and give me attention. Im 21 now and have 2 kids of my own. If they decide to have an imaginary friends then IM not going to say anything to them.

I did. It wasn't because of anything like that though, I knew it wasn't real, I just had a great imagination. I also talked to animals like real people and played with pretty much anything I encountered. I grew up on a farm, and one time I was in the back yard and I found the scull of a deer and I played with that scull and talked to it like it was a real person for the rest of the day.

My sister had one named casper. I told her that casper was a ghost rather than an imaginary friend but she insisted. I made up one named Sally just to mess with her. Not very nice, but you asked.
BTW...I totally think some kids can see ghosts.
