Sodas in Schools. Is this a bold compromise, a cop out, or unneccesary to begin with? (See attached article)

I think it's a great idea. Private enterprise, cooperating to limit harmful sales to children. The private sector, under pressure from the vast majority of the public is taking self-regulation without the need for governmental involvement.

It hasn't been that long since I was in high school (4 years ago), and we had at least 5 vending machines AND a concession stand setup where we could buy junk food, like at a ball game. It always seemed odd to me, and I wondered how many people would be healthier if these options just weren't there. People are going to want to drink SOMETHING with their meals so we might as well just give them healthy alternatives. A lot of times the argument is that vending machines should only be available in secondary schools, where students are old enough to make their own choices. I think this is basically putting money (the revenue received from these vendors) above the well-being of students. So...I say, bold compromise!

Sodas in school? Well... Hopefully NOT for the kids! It's just unnecessary. Schools provide healthy lunches and snacks and soda just isn't a part of that need. I have been to schools where Drink Machines exist but yes they serve juices and water. With afterschool athletics, sure, this is great and there is a need. But there is no need....none at all, for kids to have a soda. I'd have to agree with the bill.

I have not seen the attached file yet, but sodas in schools definitely will bring about a weaker generation (and country!) due to the implementation of improper food intake!

well after hearing the kinds of choices now available i cant see the harm in stopping sodas. I dont even want to say what i had in school cause i dont think today it would be legal/ a healthy diet shouldnt be an accident.

I salute the decision...kids should not be given soda unless on a special occasion. It's just so unhealthy! Bad habits start at a young age.

I think this is great! Now they need to work on getting the fast food restaurants out of the cafeterias. My old High School now has a choice between their lunch or Taco Bell. I couldn't believe that when I heard about it. :(

As a kid I lived on Mt Dew and Doritos. I got fat WAY later in life. Kids just need to get off their butts and away from games and screens. As a kid We were worried about floridation in the water, and we kept in shape by doing the Duck and Cover drills.

great idea.still PARENTS should be the ones educating kids by serving water at home!by setting an example!

even fruit juices (if not freshly squeezed-and even those,if u drink too many!)are loaded with sugar and high fructose NOT good for you, even if u are a kid!

It's prohibition for youngsters--and they shouldn't be drinking anyway so I am down with it. I never had soda in school. I had warm milk. I think we should do something about the milk being served at room temp--it can't be good for them.

They have no soda in my son's school. I was concerned when they did this that he would be getting enough sugar in his diet. My solution, I fortify his milk with molasses. My current worry is this whole "trans fat" thing. What will his cross dressing compadres do if they get rid of this.
