What's the big deal about prom?

I guess if you've got a relationship or if you've really connected with the rest of your senior class, then that would be reason enough to go. For an outsider, it's just a fancy high school dance. Does anybody /really/ regret not going? I'm not being cynical here...I'm honestly very curious about why people make such a big deal about it.

Prom night is a night to remember. When almost every girl goes out to buy a dazzling dress, a fabulous new haircut and unique, exquisite jewelery. Prom only comes once and after, no more highschool. Then everyone will probably plan to go to college. Or not. And everyone seems to be going with their boyfriend or girlfriend to have one last good time in the highschool. This is the celebration for all the people who have graduated from highschool.

so many people talk about it, and you see it all the time in movies and on tv as being such a special part of life...i think its not all that important but some make it out to be, and spread this thinking to others. also, it can be a special time for you and a special someone. you get to dress up and really show off. a big blow out for the senior year. the ultimate party!
